3. The Martian

Ridley Scott’s best film in a long while. Based on the book of the same name by Andy Weir, this uplifting survival tale perfectly captures the spirit of the book and benefits from the apt casting of Matt Damon in the lead role. Aided by stunning visuals, balanced humor, thoughtful storytelling, even pacing, first-rate performances and a terrific soundtrack (I love disco and David Bowie), the film is an exhilarating experience from start to finish.

4. The Revenant

8. 99 Homes

My review: An intense, well-acted morality tale that some might find very uncomfortable to watch considering the subject matter: foreclosure. Think of it as the real estate version of Wall Street (1987). Michael Shannon at the top of his game.

9. Experimenter
